The Miss America Pageant in the News

Miss America reunites with hometown fans

The first Miss America from Indiana began a whirlwind tour of her home state today, drawing cheers as she implored students to work hard and get involved in their communities. “You might know what you want to do and where you want to go, but do you know how you are going to get there?” Katie Stam asked high school students in her hometown of Seymour, about 60 miles south of Indianapolis. “The things you do in high school are critical to your future success, and I challenge you to take that seriously.” -- IndyStar.com

Miss America Katie Stam is returning to her southern Indiana hometown of Seymour for the first time since being crowned in January. Seymour Mayor Craig Ludeman has proclaimed Wednesday as “Miss America Katie Stam Day” in the city. The 22-year-old will be welcomed back this afternoon with a parade from Seymour High School to City Hall and make other Indiana appearances in the following days. --WIBC

Joe Montana and Miss America Share a Super Bowl Moment

Pageant Center recommending reading (This great article is followed by an interesting video). We witnessed an "interesting" moment here in Tampa on Friday. We arrived at Gatorade's G Studio to interview Mark Sanchez (stay tuned for that!) only to find that the place was on lockdown because Joe Montana was in the house. We eventually got ushered in while Montana was still there admiring the painting of his Super Bowl moment (which you can bid on at the NFL Auction site). Then something unexpected happened -- Miss America showed up. The Gatorade folks told me that she was working the media center all week and when she found out that star athletes were rolling through the G Studio she asked if she could stop by and meet them. --www.yardbarker.com

Indiana student ill, but wins Miss America crown

Katie Stam of Indiana was crowned Miss America on Saturday night, fighting off a throat infection, laryngitis and 51 other contestants to win the 88-year-old pageant. The 22-year-old University of Indianapolis student became the first Miss America winner from the Hoosier State. She drew loud applause for her rendition of "Via Dolorosa" during the talent portion of the beauty pageant at Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino on the Las Vegas Strip. Stam said she had trouble sleeping one night this week while she took prescription medicine to fight the infection, but got her voice back by Thursday. "I was feeling like myself again — I will never take my health for granted," she said. --Associated Press

Miss America vs. Miss USA

Crystle Stewart (left), Miss USA: Pittsburgh, 27-21. Arizona's offense has been flying high in the playoffs and wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald has been playing out of this world (he can catch a pass from me any day!). But the Steeler Defense has been kicking butt, and more importantly, you have got to love the old-school black and gold uniforms. After all, gold is my favorite color. Miss America: Swimsuits Hot Topic

Miss America 2009 airs live tonight on TLC, 7 p.m. CST, from The Planet Hollywood Resort in Las Vegas, NV. The all-too-darling Mario Lopez hosts. The Swimsuit competition, as usual, is a hot topic. The UK’s Daily Mail refers to our ladies as “beefy.” The Brits believe the contest is losing it’s “girl next door” identity. Scroll through a gallery of “muscle babe” contestants here and here. -- Right Pundits

Beauties vie for Miss America crown in Las Vegas

In ball gowns, blue jeans and bikinis, 52 young women were set to compete for the Miss America 2009 title, capping a mini-reality series on pageant prep work and a week of preliminary competition. The pageant airs live on TLC at 8 p.m. EST Saturday from the Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino on the Las Vegas Strip. In a new twist to the 88-year-old pageant, four of the top 15 finalists are being chosen by viewers of the lead-in reality show, "Miss America: Countdown to the Crown." --Associated Press (photo: AP)
