NEW YORK, N.Y., - May 25, 2010 ­ NBC, Donald J. Trump and Paula M. Shugart, President of the Miss Universe Organization, announced today the 2010 Miss Universe® Pageant will air live on NBC and Telemundo, Monday, August 23 (8-10 p.m. ET) from Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino in Las Vegas.

"Las Vegas is so fabulous, we had to come back again for the Miss Universe pageant," said Paula M. Shugart. "The world will be watching as women from all around the globe descend on Mandalay Bay to compete for the crown and the title!"

"We are delighted to host the 2010 Miss Universe® Pageant and look forward to showcasing the destination to our guests and the television viewers that will be joining us for this global event."

Miss Universe 2009, Stefania Fernandez, will crown her successor at the conclusion of the two-hour telecast. She has spent her reign traveling all over the world as an advocate for HIV/AIDS education, research and legislation. The woman crowned Miss Universe 2010 will continue to do the same.

Each contestant, representing over 80 countries around the world, will compete in three categories: swimsuit, evening gown and interview. Worldwide distribution of the competition has topped over 190 countries in past years.

Miss America returns to ABC for 90th anniversary of pageant

Linwood, NJ – May 24, 2010 - The Miss America Organization (MAO) is proud to announce it has reached a multi-year deal with the ABC Television Network to return as their network television partner for the 2011 Miss America Pageant that will be presented on January 15, 2011! The news was announced today by Sam Haskell, III, Board Chairman for the Miss America Organization and MAO President & CEO, Art McMaster.

ABC aired the Miss America Pageant previously in 2004 and will once again retain the exclusive telecast rights through 2013. "After thorough discussions and negotiations, we are confident that Miss America has reunited with the perfect network partner, ABC, which shares many of our same ideals and tradition," said Haskell. "Miss America's move back to network television is perfect timing as we celebrate our special 90th anniversary and look ahead to reach new heights and create a new path for the future of Miss America. Our brand is so rich in both philanthropy and history, and this new multi-year partnership will not only preserve this great institution, but it will also mark a new milestone in television with our friends at ABC."

Has Political Correctness Gotten to Beauty Pageants?

1) Has political correctness gotten to beauty pageants? This is Pipes' and Malkin's thesis. Malkin at least has an empirical toehold in observing that right-wing contestants might be treated differently than left-wing ones. Fakih is no former Miss South Carolina -- but if the AP story picked up the contrast between her performance and her victory, well, that justifies some further inquiry. Pipes' assertion, however, is just horses**t. He manages to dredge up the names of five Arab/Muslim women in the span of five years to suggest affirmative action. Let's be ultraconservative and assume that there are a combined 100 pageants a year in the countries of concern to Pipes. That means that out of 500 possible contest winners, a whopping 1% of them are Arab and/or Muslim in countries far lower than the percentage of Arab/Muslim populations living in these countries. Muslim beauty's win unleashes the beast

There is no doubt that Rima Fakih is a beauty. One look and you understand why Miss Michigan captured the Miss USA crown. Fakih is also a Lebanese immigrant, an Arab American. In the charged climate we live in, with angry pundits polarizing even insignificant events, those facts are a bigger draw than her pretty face. At 24, she may have no clue what she sashayed into. Or maybe she does. The Miss USA pageant is co-owned by Donald Trump, a master marketer and no stranger to controversy. Critics say Fakih's pageant win has been a boon to an event that garners only middling TV ratings. A 24-year-old Arab American from Michigan beat out 50 other women to take the 2010 Miss USA title Sunday night, despite nearly stumbling in her evening gown. Rima Fakih of Dearborn, Mich., won the pageant at the Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino on the Las Vegas Strip after strutting confidently in an orange and gold bikini, wearing a strapless white gown that resembled a wedding dress and saying health insurance should cover birth control pills. You would think that after last year’s Perez Hilton debacle Miss USA officials would have put some serious controls over the questions this year’s judges were allowed to ask the pageant contestants. Rima Fakih, Miss Michigan, is Crowned Miss USA 2010

Las Vegas, NV - May 16, 2010 - This evening, during one of the year's most watched live television events, a star-studded panel of judges chose Miss Michigan USA, Rima Fakih, as MISS USA® 2010. Internationally-renowned chef and current "Celebrity Apprentice" contestant Curtis Stone and "Today" show co-host and correspondent Natalie Morales hosted the 59th Annual MISS USA Pageant from Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino in one of the world's most electrifying cities, Las Vegas. The comedic mother-daughter duo Joan and Melissa Rivers were on hand providing backstage color commentary.

Ms. Fakih, 24, is from Dearborn, Michigan where she was raised with her younger brother. She is a graduate of the University of Michigan, where she earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics, with a minor in Business Administration. After completing her reign as MISS USA, she plans to attend law school. She enjoys traveling, running, dancing, kickboxing and especially likes playing football and watching the NFL.

Boys Like Girls (BLG) performed their new song, "Heart Heart Heartbreak" for the first time ever during the swimsuit competition and Grand Ole Opry member Trace Adkins who had 27 charted singles and 14 Top Ten hits, debuted his latest single, "This Ain't No Love Song," during the evening gown portion of the competition

Throughout the two-hour event, the contestants competed in three categories: swimsuit, evening gown and interview. Kristen Dalton, MISS USA 2009, crowned her successor at the conclusion of the telecast, before an estimated worldwide viewing audience of more than 250 million.

North Carolina Rep Files Bill To Regulate Child Beauty Pageants

Someone with some power has realized that tanning lotion and false eyelashes might not be the best thing for toddlers.

North Carolina Representative Annie Mobley introduced a bill on April 8 to establish a legislative study committee on the "regulation of beauty pageants for youth under 13," which includes the "use of excessive makeup." The bill calls for an allotment of funds to form a committee called the North Carolina Agency to Regulate Beauty Pageants for Girls Under Thirteen — comprised of five members of the House and five members of the Senate — to study the psychological effects of beauty pageants on children under 13, developing an agency to regulate them, and what criteria to impose (e.g. minimum age requirements, parental participation, and gluing false lashes to a two-year-old). jezebel.com  Read more...

Former Miss America Colleen Kay Hutchins Dies

Miss America 1952 Colleen Kay Hutchins passed away early this morning in her home in Newport Beach, California at the age of 83, according to her son, Kiki Vandeweghe. Kiki said his mother had been ill for about six months.

Colleen was a Salt Lake City resident when she was crowned as Brigham Young University Homecoming Queen in 1947. Five years later she won the Miss America title. Crowned just prior to the television era, Colleen graciously stood over six feet in heels, and was said to have stopped a basketball game at the University of Pennsylvania by arriving late and walking down the sidelines. As a Miss America contestant she was not only an accomplished athlete, but had already achieved an undergraduate degree and was well on her way to earning a Master's Degree in Drama.

Following Colleen's year of service as Miss America, she performed on Broadway and toured Europe. She married her husband who was a physician and a member of the New York Knicks. They honeymooned at Queen Elizabeth's Coronation. The Hutchins made Wiesbaden, Germany, their home for some time, developing lifelong friendships with many prominent Europeans. They later settled in Bel Air, California, and raised four All-American College and Olympic athletes who are now accomplished professionals in their own right. Colleen and her family have enjoyed a happy and fulfilling life, contributing to many social and community causes. She resided in Palm Springs, California, and devoted much energy to her philanthropic objectives and enjoyed the opportunity of guiding her grandchildren in their athletic and scholastic accomplishments.

Colleen is survived by her husband and four children, including Kiki Vandeweghe, who is the interim coach and general manager of the NBA's New Jersey Nets.

Our deepest sympathies and condolences go out to Colleen’s family at this time of sorrow. We will treasure the memories and the legacy of our beloved Miss America 1952 Colleen Hutchins.

NBC Signs on to Broadcast Miss Universe® and Miss USA® Pageants for Three Years

NEW YORK and UNIVERSAL CITY, Calif. - March 8, 2010 - NBC has renewed its exclusive agreement with Donald Trump and the Miss Universe Organization to broadcast the "Miss Universe" and "Miss USA" pageants on the network for three additional years effective in 2011. Telemundo is also on board to continue its hugely successful Spanish language simulcast of "Miss Universe" as well as its top-rated pageant lead-in special, "Camino a la Corona." The announcement was made today by Donald Trump, Miss Universe Organization president Paula Shugart and Jeff Gaspin, Chairman, NBC Universal Television Entertainment.

Miss America 2010 Caressa Cameron Visits Hawaii!

Miss America 2010 Caressa Cameron takes her official dip in the ocean -- the Pacific Ocean that is! Within weeks of being crowned, Miss America 2010, Caressa Cameron hit the beach in Maui, and while most in the country were digging out from snowstorms, our Miss America was in sunny Hawaii on her first official visit with our cosmetic and skincare provider, Artistry by Amway Global. This wonderful trip, sponsored by Amway, was to support their annual event on the big island.

Caressa was able to work with the sponsors and their VIP's and shoot some beautiful promotional videos. "The trip to Hawaii was absolutely wonderful. It has been an incredible month and I can't wait to see what the months ahead will bring. It has been a dream come true," said Caressa. While in Hawaii, Caressa officially dipped her toes in the Pacific and followed the tradition established long ago in Atlantic City when Miss America would take the first dip after being crowned. Miss Universe, Miss USA and Miss Teen USA appear in the New York Daily News!

On February 12, 2010, Miss Universe Stefania Hernandez, Miss USA Kristen Dalton and Miss Teen USA Stormee Henley, appeared in the New York Daily News when they made an appearance at the James Peters Veteran's Medical Center in the Bronx where they gave out Valentine's Day cards and gifts to injured veterans. 

They are show visiting disabled soldier, pfc Roberto Reyes.

Carrie Prejean is Engaged!

LOS ANGELES, Calif. -- Carrie Prejean is engaged. The embattled beauty queen, who was dethroned from the Miss California title last year, became engaged over the weekend to St. Louis Rams quarterback Kyle Boller, Carrie's mother, Francine Coppola, told Access Hollywood on Monday. According to Francine, Carrie, 22, described the proposal as similar to a scene out of 2004's romance film "The Notebook," which starred Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams. Miss Virginia, Caressa Cameron, emerge from a pool of 53 candidates to win the 2010 Miss America title Saturday night during a modernized and surprisingly entertaining Miss America Pageant held in Las Vegas.

The 22-year-old student from Fredericksburg, Virginia, had won the preliminary talent competition earlier in the week after impressing the judges with a strong vocal performance of Beyonce's "Listen" from the film "Dreamgirls". The new Miss America, a broadcast journalism major at Virginia Commonwealth University, who aspires to become a television anchor, won a $50,000 scholarship.
