Has Political Correctness Gotten to Beauty Pageants?
1)
Has political correctness gotten to beauty pageants? This is Pipes' and Malkin's thesis. Malkin at least has an empirical toehold in observing that right-wing contestants might be treated differently than left-wing ones. Fakih is no former Miss South Carolina -- but if the AP story picked up the contrast between her performance and her victory, well, that justifies some further inquiry.
Pipes' assertion, however, is just horses**t. He manages to dredge up the names of five Arab/Muslim women in the span of five years to suggest affirmative action. Let's be ultraconservative and assume that there are a combined 100 pageants a year in the countries of concern to Pipes. That means that out of 500 possible contest winners, a whopping 1% of them are Arab and/or Muslim in countries far lower than the percentage of Arab/Muslim populations living in these countries. That's nothing close to resembling affirmative action.

Muslim beauty's win unleashes the beast
There is no doubt that Rima Fakih is a beauty. One look and you understand why
Miss Michigan captured the Miss USA crown. Fakih is also a Lebanese immigrant, an Arab American. In the charged climate we live in, with angry pundits polarizing even insignificant events, those facts are a bigger draw than her pretty face. At 24, she may have no clue what she sashayed into.
Or maybe she does. The Miss USA pageant is co-owned by Donald Trump, a master marketer and no stranger to controversy. Critics say Fakih's pageant win has been a boon to an event that garners only middling TV ratings. The same was said last year when Miss California Carrie Prejean
and her conservative Christian supporters claimed she lost her shot at the top
tiara for voicing her opposition to gay marriage.

Michigan's Rima Fakih Wins Miss USA Pageant
A 24-year-old Arab American from Michigan beat out 50 other women to take the 2010 Miss USA title Sunday night, despite nearly stumbling in her evening gown. Rima Fakih of Dearborn, Mich., won the pageant at the Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino on the Las Vegas Strip after strutting confidently in an orange and gold bikini, wearing a strapless white gown that resembled a wedding dress and saying health insurance should cover birth control pills.
When asked how she felt about winning the crown, she said, "Ask me after I've had a pizza."

Miss USA Defends Pole-arizing Stripper Pics
And here we thought Lindsay Lohan had a lock on offering up the oddest excuse of the day. Well folks, a new challenger has stepped into the ring!
Pole-friendly Miss USA Rima Fakih stopped by the Today show this morning and, after paying lip service to her world-peace-seeking win on the pageant circuit, she addressed the controversy du jour.
Rima, you see, was doing nothing more than being a solid friend.
"I just want to say, I can't deny the pictures, obviously people can see them on TV right now," she told Meredith Vieira and Matt Lauer this morning.

Leftist Hollywood Injects Divisive Politics Into Miss USA Pageant… Again
You would think that after last year’s Perez Hilton debacle Miss USA officials would have put some serious controls over the questions this year’s judges were allowed to ask the pageant contestants. Instead, Sunday’s event had actor Oscar Nuńez of NBC’s “The Office” grilling Miss Oklahoma on the recently passed anti-illegal immigration law in Arizona....The question itself is nearly incomprehensible but Miss Oklahoma, Morgan Woolard, handles it with grace, aplomb, and intelligence. Naturally, she didn’t win.

Miss USA
pageant finds itself in another controversy involving pictures
The Internet is abuzz today with a new wrinkle in the marketing of the once squeaky-clean Miss USA pageant.
Instead of merely sporting the beautiful ball gowns for their official portrait the contestants typically don; this year the beauty queens are posing in lingerie, fishnet stockings, and racy bras - quite a departure from when the pageant first started in 1950.

North Carolina Rep Files Bill To Regulate Child Beauty Pageants
Someone with some power has realized that tanning lotion and
false eyelashes might not be the best thing for toddlers.
North Carolina Representative Annie Mobley introduced a bill on April 8 to establish a legislative study committee on the "regulation of beauty pageants for youth under 13," which includes the "use of excessive makeup."
The bill calls for an allotment of funds to form a committee called the North Carolina Agency to Regulate Beauty Pageants for Girls Under Thirteen — comprised of five members of the House and five members of the Senate — to study the psychological effects of beauty pageants on children under 13, developing an agency to regulate them, and what criteria to impose (e.g. minimum age requirements, parental participation, and gluing false lashes to a two-year-old).

Congratulations to Caressa Cameron, Miss America 2010
Miss Virginia, Caressa Cameron,
emerge from a pool of 53 candidates to win the 2010 Miss America title Saturday night during a modernized and surprisingly entertaining Miss America Pageant held in
Las Vegas.
The 22-year-old student from Fredericksburg, Virginia, had won the preliminary talent competition earlier in the week after impressing the judges
with a strong vocal performance of Beyonce's "Listen" from the film "Dreamgirls". The new Miss America, a broadcast journalism major at Virginia Commonwealth
University, who aspires to become a television anchor, won a $50,000 scholarship.
During the on-stage interview phase of competition, when the emcee asked Miss Virginia how she would approach fighting the childhood obesity issue, she stated
that she felt that youngsters should be encouraged to return to the traditions of outside play and limit television and video games. "We need to get our kids
back outside, playing with sticks in the street like I did when I was little," she remarked. "Expand your mind, go outside and get to see what this world is like."
In the evening gown competition Cameron wore a stunning form-fitting yellow gown, a strong statement in light of the long tradition of Miss America's usually
wearing white gowns. In contrast, in pageant circles, yellow is viewed as being a difficult color for contestants to carry off
in formalwear.
Interestingly, during the pre-show that aired prior to the pageant, Miss Virginia's choice of a yellow gown, was noted by former Miss
America, Erica Dunlap, who observed that she had won her Miss America title wearing a yellow gown.
The 1st runner-up was Miss California, Kristy Cavinder, who had also won a preliminary talent award for her ballet en pointe
earlier in the week. Cavinder was asked to share her views on the responsibilities of being a role model during the on-stage interview. Cavinder.
She was awarded a $25,000 scholarship.
Stefanie Wittler, Miss Tennessee, was named the 2nd runner-up. A vocalist who performed "I Will Always Love You" in the talent competition, Wittler
was asked to address the issue of tough love versus gentleness in giving criticism during the onstage interview.
Miss Louisiana, Katherine Putnam was named the 3rd runner-up, after performing "Handel's Messiah" on the piano during the talent competition and discussing why the USA should send emergency aid to Haiti given our own country's current
financial woes.
Miss Kentucky, Mallory Ervin, was named the 4th runner-up after performing the vocal "On My Own" and fielding an on-stage question about
if athletes who use performance enhancing drugs should be permanently banned from sports.
Fifteen contestants competed in the semi-finals during the broadcast: Miss Tennesee, Stefanie Wittler; Miss Colorado, Katie Lucille Layman;
Miss California,Kristy Cavinder (a preliminary talent winner); Miss Indiana, Nicole Pollard; Miss Hawaii, Raeceen Anuenue Woolford;
Miss Louisiana, Katherine Putnam; Miss District of Columbia, Jen Corey; Miss New Mexico, Nicole Miner; Miss Virginia, Caressa Cameron (a preliminary talent winner and the eventual Miss America 2010);
Miss Texas, Kristen Blair; and Miss Nebraska, Brittany Jeffers.
Three contestants were chosen by public popular vote to join the others in the Top 15: Miss Oklahoma, Taylor Treat, Miss Arkansas, Sarah Slocum and Miss Kentucky, Mallory Ervin. Ervin was later named the 4th runner-up.
In another new move from pageant organizers to add an element of reality show style interaction, contestants who failed to make the semi-finals, were allowed
to vote one contestant into the Top 15 as the "Contestants' Choice". The results of the live vote placed Miss Oregon, CC Barber, as the 15th
semi-finalist. Barber had won a preliminary swimsuit award earlier in the week.
