Sample Pageant Interview Questions - Economic Issues

  • Are Americans over-taxed?

  • What is your opinion of how President Obama is handling the debt crisis in the US? Do you agree with his approach to increase taxes to reduce the deficit? Would you prefer to reduce the huge federal deficit with cutbacks to entitlement programs instead? Or do you want to see both entitlement cutbacks and tax raises?

  • How do you think we could help bring our deficit into a surplus of money? How do you feel about the deficit in money?

  • Do you think that unions exert too much political influence?

  • Do you think that businesses need fewer regulations and cost mandates?

  • Critics say that the Wal-Mart chain is killing our nation's mom-and-pop-shops. Would you like to see restraints on large chains to protect family-owned businesses?

  • U.S. businesses have exported thousands of Americans' jobs overseas under "free trade". Should U.S. business be banned from exporting jobs outside the U.S.?

  • What are your views of President Obama’s historically high federal deficit?

  • Critics claims that Washington is incapable of controlling spending and that the only real solution is adopt a balanced budget amendment. Do you support the passage of a "Balanced Budget Amendment" requiring the government to live within its means? Why or why not?

  • What is your opinion of the growing number of foreign investments in the United States?

  • Some businesses claim that increasing the minimum wage will discourage hiring young, inexperienced workers. What are your thoughts?

  • How would you solve the federal deficit problem?

  • How do you think we could help bring our deficit into a surplus of money? How do you feel about the deficit in money?

  • The Bush administration supported China's entry into the World Trade Organization. Do you have concerns about Chinese imports costing Americans jobs?

  • According to one Texas lawmaker, under the Obama administration we are on the trajectory to government spending doubling from 20% to 40% of our overall economy, which could lead to significant tax increases. Do you support the recommendation by one lawmaker that spending by the federal government be limited to 15% of our nation’s overall economy?

  • In 2007, under President Bush II, federal spending reached $2.73 trillion. In 2009, under President Obama, federal spending increased to $3.52 trillion, an increase of 18%, or $536 billion in one year. Critics say the unbridled spending is unsustainable and that it places the United States at risk of possible bankruptcy. Given the huge national deficit, do you support forcing the federal government to abide by a spending cap? Why or why not?

  • Do you support limiting the scope and size of the national government?

  • A budget deficit occurs when government spends more money than it takes in. The CBO (Congressional Budget Office) projects that the federal budget would have a deficit of $1.3 trillion for fiscal year 2010. How would you solve the federal deficit problem?
  • How would you resolve America's serious trade imbalance?

  • Do you support the need for regulation of derivatives, which are believed to have been behind the 2008 financial near meltdown of the US and world economies? Why or why not?

  • Do you think our economy is doing better - or worse?
